EXTENDED ABSTRACT INSTRUCTIONS
A unique feature of the Ocean Optics Conference is that participants submit both a short abstract and have the option of submitting a detailed “extended” abstract. The goal of this system is to provide participants with the opportunity to present research at the conference, receive feedback from colleagues, and then refine extended abstracts for later submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals.

All other participants should submit their abstracts by this date to allow time for staff to link to the extended abstract from the online conference program materials.
Instructions for Preparation
An extended abstract must be organized in the follow manner:
- Title, list of authors with institutional affiliation and contact information, text body: Total length must not exceed 6 single-spaced pages, one column using 12-point font (Times New Roman preferred). Text body should follow the standard research paper format, with sections delineated as “Introduction”, “Background”, “Approach”, “Results”, “Discussion”, and “Conclusions”, as appropriate. All equations should be clear, using readily available font sets. If using MS Word, it is suggested that you use the built-in equation editor.
- References: All abstracts should include a complete reference list. This list should be alphabetical by the last name of the first author and the format should generally flow the guidelines of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. References do not count towards the 6-page limit for the text body.
- Tables and Figures: A maximum of 6 graphical elements (inclusive of tables, charts, figures, and other graphics) may be included and must appear after the text and references. Color graphics are allowed. All elements should be numbered sequentially. Each element must include a complete caption such that the reader can understand the information without having to refer to the text body. Graphic quality should be at least 96 dpi in order to display well on a computer screen.
Submission Options
New this year: Two options for submitting extended abstracts are being offered this year, and although submission to ESSOAr* is encouraged, either option can be used.
OPTION 1 — Submission to ESSOAr (Earth and Space Science Open Archive)
Participants access the ESSOAr system using their ORCID, After submitting the extended abstract (called a “preprint “in the ESSOAr system), the document is reviewed and posted within a few days. A URL containing a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is assigned. The document is now citable and easily accessible. If this submission method is used, the participant must provide the Conference Organizer Jenny Ramarui, with the URL associated with submission so that it can be included in the online conference program materials. The submission procedure is below:

- Enter your ORCID
- You will be returned to the ESSOAr submission page
- Enter your identifying information and answer other questions as required
- In the box labled Add Preprint/Poster PDF, attach a PDF of your extended abstract (referred to as a preprint in this system).
- Click Review and Submit
- After review and approval from ESSOAr, email the URL to Jenny Ramarui. The online conference program materials will link to the submission hosted by ESSOAr.
OPTION 2 — Submission to the Ocean Optics Conference Organizer
Extended abstracts can be submitted as PDFs using the same abstract submission system that was used to submit short abstracts. Visit this link, and use the same login and password you established previously to access the system. Extended abstracts submitted by this method will stored on the conference Google folder, and are shared with other conference attendees via links in the online conference program materials. No formal citation or DOI is assigned.
SPECIAL NOTE FOR STUDENTS
Use Option 2 to submit your extended abstract by September 30 to be considered for the Best Student Paper Award. You may also submit to ESSSOAr, but the extended abstract will be reviewed and scored in the current abstract management system.
* About ESSOAr: In early 2018 the American Geophysical Union launched the Earth and Space Science Open Archive (ESSOAr). ESSOAr is a community server established to accelerate the open discovery and dissemination of Earth and space science early research outputs, including preprints and posters presented at major scientific meetings. This dissemination allows researchers to share preliminary results and receive peer feedback ahead of formal publication to improve their work and establish priority. All content posted on ESSOAr will receive a DOI and be fully citable and freely accessible. Preprints will be linked and resolve to the official published version of record, once available.
